Flexible type variables didn't break, but the syntax changed (in the
sessions branch) when we appropriated ? for session types.

Try %a instead.

Were flexible type variables removed or did they break?

If they were removed intentionally, someone should update the
documentation. Preferably with a better solution than just commenting out
the signature.
