What about using that github-changes tool we used in dust:

https://github.com/lalitkapoor/github-changes

the command:

github-changes -o linkedin -r hopscotch -a --only-pulls --use-commit-body --order-semver -v

Yup, I was going to look into that :). The problem with this repo is that previous releases weren't tagged. So I might have to go back and tag certain commits as releases.

I've used this tool to generate initial changelog (and I had to go back and tag previous releases for it to work).

I've looked into integrating this into release process with grunt. It's not very straightforward and can be misleading. Since it's using github API to pull down commit history, all changes have to be committed and pushed upstream prior to running this tool.

Another side effect of using github API vs local commit history is that patching older releases would always generate full changelog instead of just history up to that version.

It seems a tool that is relying on local commit history of current branch would be better suited for integration with grunt release process.
