This library is indeed only for generating qr images, not reading them. This would be cool functionality to add though if someone wanted to look at it.
I'm sorry, but I don't know of any libraries to assist you in what you want to do though.

You could try zbar. It's C but has python bindings.

@pik because it's not something anyone is actively working on and isn't part of the primary goal of qrcode. Easy to reopen if someone wants to spearhead the effort though.
