Another player is asking me to reopen this issue. :-/

So today I was playing and I had just begun a new game. We were only 1 or 2 moves in when I suddenly had to...well...make an emergency visit to the bathroom. I knew I would take too long so I decided to resign from the game, however, I lost points AND my account received a warning for doing this. I understand why players are penalized for resigning extremely early, however, I think a "Pause Game" option should be implemented to prevent unfair penalization.

The ability to pause a game would be very convenient, not just for emergency bathroom visits, but countless other scenarios where someone would need to temporarily stop playing. For example, your cat just threw up on your bed and you need to clean it up immediately. Your mom is shouting at you because it's your turn to wash the dishes. Both of these situations would not take more than 15 minutes to resolve, so you could just go back to your game after!

I realize there are problems with this proposal, so here are my counter-arguments to some possible objections:

Someone could abuse the feature by pausing, figuring out their next move, and unpausing.

Simply hide the board while the game is paused so players can't see it.

If you can't finish a game in one sitting, you shouldn't start one.

Sometimes there are unforeseen circumstances such as my bathroom situation. You don't know what's happening to someone on the other side of the screen.

What if the player than initiated the pause takes too long to return?

There would be a reasonable time limit (30 min) AND the other player can leave if they get tired of waiting.

Someone could spam the pause button just to be annoying.

There would be a reasonably lengthed cooldown of 5 - 10 min. OR both players need to consent to pausing the game (similar to how both players need to agree to initiate a takeback)

I know there is probably a reason that this feature isn't already a thing. I still want to put my 2 cents in, so yeah. :>

+1

I would also like support for longer clock times, 1 day and 3 days.

I don't need this feature anymore now that there is Correspondence chess.

I'm glad to hear that your request has been addressed. On the other hand having clock pause probably isn't as high in priority though.
