@michaelgpearce cool, I see you've been digging into this (jruby/jruby#1259). Maybe we can add a switch to use OpenSSL::Digest::RIPEMD160 when on jruby. Do you know of any other issues with jruby?

Unfortunately, there ended up being enough problems that I decided to use bitcoinj instead of bitcoin-ruby. JRuby seems to be pretty incomplete when it comes to the crypto side of things.

Bummer. For what it's worth, I also noticed your effort to fix this specific issue in jruby (jruby/jruby#1261) - thanks a lot for your effort!
So bitcoin-ruby probably won't have jruby support anytime soon...
At least the number of issues with rubinius seems to be decreasing.

Yeah, kinda sucks. I probably could have kept going, but my goal was not to implement a bunch of crypto in Ruby, it was to write a Bitcoin application.
