That is an odd error. Let me investigate. I will get back to you.

The error is clear enough, but the makefile should have added the required flag.

I also had the same problem when just calling cmake. But adding CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE like this
cmake .. -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release
solved the problem.

Thats odd because in the output of the makefile it says that it defaults to release but it solved this error for me. Thanks!
I didn't notice this works because I got another error on SSE 4.1 when I did it but I solved this with an additional compiler flag.

I think I fixed the problem. My take on the issue is that we used to set, temporarily, the build type for the duration of the cmake script, but we actually want to write the build type to cache if it is not specified.

Could be that the cmake people simply do not like the idea of a default build type...
