Why don't you just do:
$example = Example::find(1);
$example->fill(Input::all());

Cool, that seems like a decent solution thanks. So that kind of confirms that you can't do the hydration on update only on creation?
(Not that's it's much harder to do what you've put but would like to understand)

Right. Not to be a stick in the mud, I love Ardent, but I think auto hydration is kind of bad practice to begin with. I would just do something like..
$user = new User;
$user->fill(Input::all());
Not that much extra code and it's much easier to understand what's happening, no magic behind the scenes you have to work out.
