Are you sure this is real? None of the flag checks in Cyclos' code look like they could be for this.
In my experience, it seems like Cyclos sucks you up in around 5 seconds if you don't take the bow out, or in around 25 seconds if you take the bow out but don't kill him in time. Could this be what you're thinking of?

That sounds like it's it. It doesn't explain my experience in the vanilla game, but maybe I misremembered it.
