I have the same problem, but on a Xoom using 3.2.1, with a Logitech "Tablet
Keyboard for Android 3.0+"

Oddly, all the software keyboards I have installed do the same thing (stock
Android one, the Hacker Kbd, and Swype)

I went back into my settings and disabled "Enable trace input" under the input
settings for the Asus keyboard. This fixed the problem. I can now type (){}[]
symbols into the terminal.

Im not sure what the defaults are but here are other settings that might be
non-default.

Word reselection: Checked
Next Word Prediction: Not Chekced
AutoCorrection: Off
Enable trace Input: Unchecked
Auto-Accept: Not checked
Vibrate on Keypress: Not checked
Sound on Kepress: Not checked
Auto-Capitolization: Not checked
Auto punctuation: checked

I also disabled all keyboards under Keyboard and Input methods except "Android
Keyboard" and "Asus Keyboard". I'm also using the version of SL4A that is
titled "Scripting Layer for Android 45x Tablet Remix".

Hope this helps someone else.

turns out I made a mistake, the way that I enabled the keyboard was under the
terminal window, I disabled "physical keyboard", then reenabled it and that
allows me to type symbols. If the soft keyboard is in the way, you can just
minimize it.

Yes... I found that disabling and re-enabling the physical keyboard solved this
problem.
