My guess would be an outdated OS

Yeah that's massively outdated, I'm not sure of the changes in bash since 2002 but I'm willing to bet they're large enough to cause syntax errors. Installing 4.2 now via MacPorts, will edit comment with outcome.
Edit: I'm not sure why I didn't think to update bash before, but now I've stumbled across the fact that there's no support for G4 architecture. The script assumes an intel chipset. It's also not listing my shell or resolution. I'd have to look at the script to see how it's getting resolution, though, I'm not sure if the fact that this is SSH has anything to do with it.

The res would probably be an SSH problem. The error you see there is why shell is not being outputted. Looks like I'll have to start finding testers for new OS X fixes again. :P
