For anyone looking at this later like me, I'm using this compromise:
V2
:root {
--reading-width: min(45rem, 90%);
}
body {
grid-template-columns: 0fr 100% 0fr;
}
V1
:root {
--reading-width: min(45rem, 90%);
}
body {
max-width: revert;
}
This way I can still limit the max-width when appropriate and even adjust it from view to view by changing the value of the variable if need be.

One minor thing to add here... For anyone else new to CSS Grid
, if you want your page wider, but with some padding and centered, used:
body { /* 80% here is our page width... */
grid-template-columns: 0fr 80% 0fr;
place-content: center;
}
from simple.css.
I think changing or overriding the max-width (around line 67) to something wider than 45rem should work.

Change the max-width
on the body
element to be whatever you like.
