I'd search and/or ask for advice on the requirejs group, as this appears to be an app configuration issue not a requirejs-rails problem.

Some things to get you started: Can you precompile locally, vs. on Heroku? Do you get the same error? Also, I note that you defined the shim as gmap3, but in your description you say you're getting an error google is not defined. Are you sure the name defined in the shim and the name you're passing to require are the same?

Closing as this doesn't appear to be a requirejs-rails issue at this time.
