Just for the sake cross-reference, I would say that @fastdiff
falls under this category. That macro is currently narrow in scope, but I wonder if it could be expanded to encompass some of the above assumptions in an elegant way.

Just had an idea: change @fastdiff
to @forward
, and allow the user to place it anywhere they'd like to perform a forward-mode optimization. That's a more precise name, and widens the scope of the macro to include any scalar kernel, which could really cut down on scalar node recording.
