I haven't been using Gnome for some years now and I don't have setup developing this software right now. Rough guess is that this relates to the gnome-shell theme being used. E.g. if you have previously used this app with older gnome the app will cache the used gnome-shell theme and next time if you use the app to change the background it will use the cached gnome-shell theme which is in this case the old one and does not match to the newly updated gnomes theme. Settings has a possibility to update the cached gnome-shell theme and that is recommended after each gnome-shell update. The update does not do that automatically since there is no hooks implemented.
