I have this implemented (on the smarter-escape-string branch of my fork), but there is one issue. In print.lisp, the write-to-string function uses escape-string for creating string representations of strings. This means that the new escape-string function also changes how strings are printed:

CL-USER> "foo"
'foo'
CL-USER> "foo's"
"foo's"

Is this acceptable? Or should we just stick with the old function?

I guess the other alternative is to leave the current function in place, use it for write-to-string, and use the new function everywhere else.

I see. The escaping is different for Lisp and Javascript. Sure, I think a couple of functions make sense.
