Confirmed as a bug. This apparently happens only when you use the mouse to select the item -- if you use the cursor keys and ENTER, the actual selection is picked up fine.
Thanks for the report, this has been happening sporadically in the past but now I finally have a way of replicating it!

It took quite a bit of rewriting, but this should be fixed now, and bug 2920325 along with it (wasn't quite a duplicate, but still definitely related to this).
I've also tweaked the selection logic a bit so that entering a two-letter code like "AF" and tabbing away from it defaults to airlines, not airports.
