While what I found on SO did fix my problem at the time, the code in this repo works out of the box. Upon further investigation, it appears that it was a problem with the path I took to migrate from 2.0 to 2.1 plus not cleaning my project. After cleaning, I was able to use play-authenticate code in my project without issue or modification.
