Sounds good. I've mocked something up (Need to find images I can use, so for now they're just letters - L = Left Align, R = Right Align, T = Top Align, B = Bottom Align, X = X Axis Align, Y = Y Axis Align). Need to change tooltips and for some reason the popup is a little wider than I set it, and so on, but is this how you mean?

Colour should automatically update in the color dialog I agree. Will fix that :)

Will probably add a nudge 1px up, down, left and right also for slightly more refined control :)

v2.2.6013.30494 should be a little more refined. Let me know if you have any other thoughts..!

I just noticed some resolution was being lost also. Not sure how I missed this for so long. Ignore my last post, try this build and let me know if this is any better..!

Hey - Thanks a lot for the feedback and your kind words, it means a lot and I'm glad it's useful to you :)

I like the suggestions:

  1. I was speaking with someone in one of the other issue threads about making a 'first run tutorial' to highlight the usage of the app. Perhaps a first run splash screen, or at least some documentation. The first version(s) of this were a lot clearer on how the application works as it was a lot less involved than it is now, so it wasn't as necessary. I agree, without knowing that, it's not particularly obvious at all. Let me know if you have any suggestions on how this could be improved :)
  2. I had thought of this previously when I was making it more of a 'live preview', but I wasn't quite sure whether this uses some default font or a system setting. I somewhat put it on the backburner as I figured if I couldn't be sure, putting the wrong text overlay on it could be more confusing than just not including it. That said, I'm somewhat running out of ideas for progressing this, so I may bump it back up in the priority list.
  3. Very good idea. Will look into doing this very soon :)
  4. The dark skin was a request from a user on XDA, I added it as a proof of concept and I wasn't ever too happy with how it actually looks. I also made the skinning library myself as I couldn't find any simple libraries to do so. As such, there are elements that currently don't actually change when the skin changes (see the menu items on mouse over which look horrendous). I'll revisit this again, and I should really make the choice persist between runs once I'm happier with it.

Again - thanks a lot for the feedback, I was starting to run out of ideas ;) Feel free to let me know if there's anything else that could benefit from being changed!

Thanks for the quick reply! What you're saying about the whole system font thing makes perfect sense. Unless there's a way for you to hook into the system settings and sort of reverse engineer the process to determine an accurate text overlay, then it's probably not worth doing.

Another idea just occurred to me when scanning through my large list of shortcuts (let me know as soon as I get annoying!). It would be super convenient if there were a simple search text box either above or below the list of shortcuts so that the shortcut names can be filtered. In my case, there's a word I'm looking for in a shortcut name, but it isn't necessarily the first word, so scanning alphabetically won't find me all of the ones I'm looking for.

Another good idea. I've addressed the eyedropper request and the filter results request - could you give the attached build a go and let me know if this is what you had in mind? I haven't thoroughly tested it yet, just want to be sure we're both on the same page :)

Thanks again for your suggestions, they're very helpful!

Damn, you work fast! Exactly what I imagined. That's really cool that it can detect the color of anything on your screen, even things outside of that exe window. Do you mind if I ask how you did that? Filter works great too.

I've actually used someone else's source for that element. I started doing it but then realised I was reinventing the wheel ;)

It works by taking a screenshot of the entire desktop on every movement of the mouse, grabbing a small region based on the position of the mouse cursor. Quite straight forward and my initial attempt was only about 10 lines of code, but this ones a lot more polished with a preview and cursor change etc. It seemed silly not to just use that :)

Figured I'd add the text overlay (maybe with a toggle override) using the default font, can't do any harm..!

Thanks again for your input.

3 of the 5 suggestions addressed in the latest release (v2.1.6011.41170). I've also updated the README.md so the main page has some basic instructions, but I do need to do something more thorough as a tutorial for first users.

Not quite sure how to go about the skinning part, if I'm honest I couldn't actually decide whether to keep it as it's the kind of utility you'd use for a few minutes and then never touch again. Still thinking on that one! :)

I love it. Back again with another idea. I noticed that when I create a custom shortcut, I sometimes want to choose a different name. In my case, I made a copy of the "SQL Server 2014 Management Studio" shortcut and gave it the shorter name "SSMS 2014". However, to do this, I first made the copy via Tile Iconifier, then I had to manually navigate to the shortcut file, and rename it from there. Not only is this a bit inconvenient, but it also causes Tile Iconifier to crash because it's trying to modify a shortcut whose name has changed. I think this idea would take care of both of those issues – when creating a custom shortcut, perhaps a text box could appear, allowing me to choose the name rather than assuming I want the same name as the shortcut I copied. This would eliminate the need to go manually rename the shortcut and stop it from crashing. For convenience's sake, the text box could auto populate with the name of the shortcut being copied, so that in the majority of cases, when you want to keep the same name, it's already there for you and you only have to click OK.

Don't know if I explained that clearly or not. Let me know what you think.

I think you explained just fine. Have added it in the latest release, let me know if I understood correctly :)

Very nice. It might be a little confusing showing the Custom Name field before the user has actually created the custom shortcut, but it does the trick. And just to be annoying, I've got another idea! When I use lettering on my medium icons, I like to vertically offset the image a little higher than dead-center so that the text and the image don't overlap. This is good for really busy looking icons, like this one. When I move the icon up, though, it tends to get horizontally unaligned, and I have to eyeball it. If this is something you think is worth tackling, a possible solution would be to include full positioning controls, like the ones in GIMP. I'm not sure where they would fit – maybe the Center Image button, when clicked, instead of moving the image, makes the full positioning controls appear. Once any of those are clicked, then the image would move. Here's a little mock-up. Essentially, the Center Image button becomes the Align Image button.

Let me know what you think :)

Not sure if this is technically a bug or not, but if you have a custom color entered in, I would expect for the color wheel button to have that custom color auto-selected when I open it. For me, it's defaulting to black. It would be nice for whatever color you have entered in to be what is auto-selected when you open the color options, especially for when you click the "Define Custom Colors >>".

I'm new to commenting in GitHub, so let me know if I should keep commenting on this thread or if I should open up new ones when they pertain to new issues. For this one, I noticed that for certain icons, black spots appear that don't seem to be there when looking directly at the shortcut/exe file itself. Here's a screen capture I took of the issue taking place with the CCleaner icon: 2016-06-20_16-30-22.zip

Separate issues would be handy in case it takes me a while to resolve them so I don't lose track. That said, thanks for raising these, annoyed how many things I've missed! Could you try the attached build and see if the CCleaner logo (and any others you have spotted) looks any sharper? Thanks a lot for your input, it's really helpful :)
