Seems a bit unnecessary to me, why not just navigate to e.g. /404.html?

Let's say I'm writing a fantastic site, but I did not notice I typed a URL wrong. My markdown looks like this:

See my [index page](index.htm).

I forgot the "l" in "html". If I use this link when on my GitHub, S3 or Apache hosted site it will go to 404 and I can then have the web server provide a custom 404 page (it would just load /404.html or similar). The "wintersmith preview" command can't emulate this behavior at all. It would be nice to have my preview of the site act the same as the real thing whenever possible.

I figured that having the browser look the same in production and in development environments is a good goal.

Perhaps this could be a plugin if you don't want to increase the size of wintersmith, but I don't remember a category for plugins that handle HTTP requests.

No there is no way to hook in to the preview server via plugins.

If anyone wants to add this i'll accept a patch.

Cleaning up old issues, feel free to create a new one if this still is a problem.
