It is going to be a very long time before that format is deprecated and considering how the next version of Grunt is shaping up; it may never be deprecated. I'll discuss with the team about changing the wording in the docs. I don't think it should say it is deprecated and avoid it where possible.

Either case, since this plugin uses this.files, if it were deprecated only the examples in the docs would need an update. Were talking likely a year out. :)

I defer to @shama on all matters Grunt-configuration-related. :)

Happy to change the docs to whatever is current best-practice!

Yeah I noticed after I posted that the code's using this.files. However, I cannot make anything run using the new files object format. I'll look into it.

By the way, my externalize also doesn't work. I'm looking into it too.

Edit: verified it's a bug, will post another issue.

@shama The current file format in the README was added in a PR at some point; I'd prefer to use src and dest in the examples. Is that still considered the "right" way of doing things with Grunt?

@jmreidy Oh totally; src and dest is cool and probably the most common format.
I just picked the most terse format to try and entice browserify folks :) Thanks @jmreidy!

I'm going to close this for now; the README shows the terse version, and the Gruntfile shows the more verbose version.
