Howdy.
I just spent a huge amount of time looking at this. The best guess I have is that when you switched from czmq (as peering1 uses) to zmq directly (as the racket library provides), some flag was lost that made things work. For instance, czmq uses SENDMORE on the first part of the status message. I would look into these things.
