Ralf, have you checked the work of Kevin and Klas? That is quite related to this issue... with this new code we're getting into cdk-1.4.x, you can resolve where to find the location of double bonds...

For editing purposes, that representation is much easier to work with than those circles...

No, I have no idea about what Kevin and Klas do. However, I still think there should be an option to turn on circles in JCP, and it should be ON as default. As soon as the user clicks on the double bond button, or on a ring atom/bond, it should switch OFF.

Ah, and a doubleclick on double-bond should try to turn on the circles... apart from the usual popup menu option.
