basically. I'm guessing that units = "seconds since 2020-01-01 00:00:00"
or similar, and that pint
is complaining that the -
don't make sense in a units definition.
I think the best way to fix this would be to have .pint.quantify
ignore units
attributes with a format of "{unit} since {datetime}"
(but still raise if you pass a unit like that as a parameter).

Is this just telling us that one of your units strings is something that pint's parser is unable to parse?

This only happens if cf units are not decoded, right? So maybe ignoring undecoded units (xarray should keep track of those) would be the most prudent solution? I wonder if there are other cases of e.g. scaled data variables (decoding might multiply + add values), where you do not want pint to act?
