Good question! There is indeed... it's the largest minimum node requirement of all of the dependencies (or was at the time that I set it). Also, based on https://nodejs.org/en/about/releases/, Node 8.x isn't even under support any longer, so it will not receive bug fixes... which means there really shouldn't be any production sites out there still on 8.x, and development/non-production shouldn't be tied to it either. (I know there are, but as a brand-new component, there isn't a lot of incentive to support old, legacy versions.)
Due to babel's transpiling, would Crossword work on an earlier version? Maybe... but it's not something I would likely spend time to investigate or support.
For what it's worth, I have some completely unrelated Javascript projects (Node.js based, not web based) that require v14.5.0 or newer, specifically to get native, non-transpiled support of some of the newer features like ESM (import/export) and the nullish coalescing operator (??). From that perspective, even 10.x feels old!
