Add an instance filter to Subject nodes to avoid selecting ones that we're not going to display. Then, add hasChildren: "Always" flag.

Doesn't work - the children check is recursive and too complex to be incorporated in parent Subjects instance filter.

Split Subject nodes' child specifications. Make sure cheaper ones are handled first.

Doesn't work - the part of the query that causes a full table scan is the one responsible for returning child nodes, so separating the cheap part doesn't help

Closing the issue as there's no way to improve the hierarchy performance without changing the hierarchy itself.
