Presentation mode does not execute cells unless you explicitly click and execute the cell.
You can still mark a cell as "skip" or "speaker notes" and it won't show In presentation mode.

Let me explain myself better: I want to present a cell with code in it, but I want the result to be a surprise - i.e. to manually execute the code during a presentation. Currently, if the cell is not evaluated before I entered presentation mode, IPython will not present it in slide mode...

This is weird,
If you "clear output" the code should still show and you can select and execute the cell while in presentation mode...

Actually it does work when in 'slide mode enabled' mode, but not otherwise... so it is good enough for me, but is this the desired behavior?

yes, it is weird... I will try to look into it...
Ah... @skariel, if you want to test another kind of live slideshow mode, you can try this one https://github.com/ipython-contrib/live_reveal
It needs improvements... but it is working ;-)
