Messages with formatting were sent with Adium on Mac OS.

First of all thanks for commenting. I saw you actually made a github account just to report this. Sadly I don't know anyone who uses a Mac and Adium is only available for Mac... So it is impossible for me to reproduce this one.
As you might understand I can not just go ahead and strip anything that looks like html from the message. (Imagine someone would want to explain some html stuff).
However I did some googleing and what I believe happens here is that the OTR plugin in Adium encrypts the HTML variant of the outgoing message instead of the plain text one. Do you get HTML mess when you receive plain text messages from the same contact as well? If not this would confirm my theory.

libotr 4.0.0 (OTRv3) no longer adds these garbage HTML tags, and should be
available in Adium 1.6.

I just tested sending a plain text message with Adium and it does not have the html formatting and all looks normal. I guess I should probably upgrade to the latest version of Adium, it's probably been a few years since I have!
