I think the real problem is that ALE (I've tried the latest v2.2.0-75-g7097880) is using matchaddpos() without specifying the optional {priority}, so it defaults to 10. This doesn't just obscure mark highlighting, but also the built-in search highlighting!

Anyway, even after ALE is changed to use negative priorities (like mark), there should be a way to influence the ranges used. I'll add a configuration for that.

I switched to t9md/vim-quickhl because I could set g:quickhl_manual_hl_priority to something high and see the marks above ALE errors.

But I was sad because I couldn't move between marked words, as I used to with this plugin. Now delighted to find I can set g:mwMaxMatchPriority now and have best of both worlds.
