It looks like Blacktop handles this much better than I do (link), including hex escapes and unicode as well, which I never considered:

- Unicode escapes: TBD
Some parts I'm unfamiliar with though ([0-3]\\d{0,2}|[4-7]\\d?), so I'll need to dig into them to figure out what they're intended to match
EDIT: I found a part of the documentation that details which escape sequences are supported:

Note: Carriage return (\r) is only available in 4.1+
