The intent of this is to be a "reference implementation" for the Encoding Standard API for the Web - http://encoding.spec.whatwg.org/#api - by definition it can't take any dependencies on things not in the Web platform.

It's also not particularly efficient, since it's designed to mimic the standard's text closely. I.e. it does crazy math rather than bit operations.

@mscdex what other kind of node-friendly things did you have in mind? I'm curious, although, I think it should stay built specifically for the web.

@RickEyre I'd have to go back and look again, but IIRC it was mostly using Buffers instead of Typed Arrays and exporting the encoder, decoder, etc.

I had a similar issue, if I'm understanding you correctly. It's easy enough to make a function that converts from a Node Buffer to an ArrayBufferView though. This is meant to work in the browser so there has to be some kind of translation.
