New Haml, Sass and Compass versions just came out and I haven't been able to update Octopress to support them yet. I'll be working on that in the next couple of days, and I have a new version set to release soon too (which puts us back onto official Jekyll). If you can hold off for a couple days I should have everything sorted out. I know that's probably not very helpful, but I just moved to a different state today and I'm not able to check things out just yet.
Thanks for checking out Octopress. I hope to have it working for you really soon.

Awesome. Can't wait. I am new to programming and compsci in general (trying to transition into development from design), and I am still working on my skillset, but I'd gladly lend a hand if I can. Is there anything I can help with?

@imathis I'm having this same issue as well.
I cloned the archive,
I ran bundle install --path vendor/bundle (because I didn't want it messing with my system defaults)
And ran rake preview, same error as above. Perhaps publish a Gemfile.lock on the master branch so that folks can clone the master and have a working system, and leave the edge branch for bleeding edge versions of things that may or may not work.
