Right, the tricky part is knowing that the pixel data hasn't changed, but only the metadata, and only writing that out. It would be much more simple to implement a "save metadata" command which always only rewrites the metadata, than it would to have it "just do the right thing" in all cases.

Sure I was thinking that. An option to "save only metadata". Other option would be confuse and hard to implement/maintain in my opinion.
