Got clarification from @jlouis. The demonitor call removes the nodedown message.
The CML style event still seems less error prone, because there is no explicit imperative programming in the client code, so this is still worth documenting.

Do note this is a special case. Many of these kinds of things are not handled CML style in Erlang, but you add extra code which watches out for spurious messages and gets rid of them from the mailbox. The general rule is that you should have at least one receive ... end
clause with a catch-all to remove unknown messages from the mailbox.
Eviction is often done at a point where you know it is safe to do so.
Another common option is to terminate the process and ignore messages left in the mailbox which are not handled at that point. It is a common crash trick in Erlang to rid stale data by termination of a process/worker.
I have seen both used with success in code. While it is not a satisfactory solution, it is a practically feasible solution to the problem. The weakness, as you mention, is the problem that it hurts modularity of systems. A process needs to "know" that certain spurious events can occur and remove them from its mailbox.
