Neither the play command on Unix nor the winsound.PlaySound method allow any volume adjustment. Isn't there a volume control in your OS? :-)
Alternatively you can define your own sounds in Nagstamon - if you use some sounds with less annoying volume your problem could be solved.

Hehe, yes my OS has volume control, the problem was that I had some music on whilst wearing headphones, and I wanted to lower the volume of the alerts so they didn't make me jump :D

I'll just lower the volume in the audio files themselves then, thanks!
