Intro to Disco: an Erlang/Python MapReduce – Hefnawi

Prologue This post is my take on reviving an old project (last commit is 3 years ago) born around 2007⁄2008 at Nokia Research Center and written in Erlang. What was exciting for me is the fact that Disco project is capable of running Python MapReduce Jobs against an Erlang core, how awesome is that! — Erlang is a synonym for parallel processing and high availability. I successfully built it though and ran a 250M records dataset which is 10GB+ in size using a Python MapReduce job that finished in 28 minutes (improved from 44 minutes) using a cluster of 3 EC2 free-tier t2.

Blinking LEDs: First PCB (2007) – Hefnawi

Prologue It was a great Friday, the 31st of August 2007 at 22:25:25 I etched my first PCB ever at home, it was the second year of high school and I was so excited about it. After doing some research and information gathering from some friends who happen to be great engineers. This is how I got started with electronics — believe it or not, by building my first PCB using Ferric Chloride FeCl3 solution with 60% concentration and a blank copper Printed Circuit Board (PCB).

Teensy LC Challenge – Hefnawi

Quest 001: Teensy LC Challenge Prologue It all started with a simple tweet. I was going through my parts inventory and found the two items collecting dust — I won them as prizes on HackADay.io for two of my projects there (you can check my profile here). So I won 2 prizes from @hackadayio back in 2015: a "#Teensy LC" & a "Cordwood Puzzle". Thanks @szczys @asiwatch I was busy since then & never used it, so now it's time to put it to Good Use.

How to Program Yaesu FT-4X Handheld Radio using CHIRP on Linux – Hefnawi

Prologue Yaesu FT-4X is a very interesting handheld radio that is not very expensive (~ £65) and I believe is a good starting point compared to my previous Baofeng UV-5R Plus radio. I suggest you read the article by QRPblog in the references below for an in-depth review of FT-4X (also some comparison against Baofeng UV-5Rs). This post will explain how to progam a list of repeaters using CHIRP software into a Yaesu FT-4XE handheld radio, which is the European version of FT-4X, however, the procedure should be identical for FT-4XR (USA/Asian version) AFAIK.

Custom-Built Isothermal Heat Conduction Calorimeter – Hefnawi

Prologue A Heat Conduction Isothermal Calorimeter is used to determine the heat flow rate of a specific process or reaction, in my case, it is designed to measure the heat rate of hydration of cement in the field of Civil Engineering and Materials Science. The purpose of this custom-built Isothermal Calorimeter is to undertake the ASTM C1702 Standard Test Method for Measurement of Heat of Hydration of Hydraulic Cementitious Materials Using Isothermal Conduction Calorimetry.

Detect SARS-CoV-2 virus using Near-infrared spectroscopy – Hefnawi 🦙

A work in-progress that started on 25 March, 2020. Prologue Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is nothing new, however, it’s a relatively new method deployed in the field of virology. It has been successfully used before to identify HIV-1 and Influenza virus. In addition, it doesn’t require any reagents, enzymes or test kits that take at least an hour to perform the test like the PCR (Polymerase chain reaction) or RT-PCR (Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) and in most cases 2+ hours.
