Isn't there a setting „Show sum” (maybe different words) that controls this? :)

I have no idea, if you mean:

Use middle click to toggle showing sum.

Middle click works for me just as left or right click it seems, it toggles between modes.

Alright, I see there is some schema going on https://github.com/hedayaty/NetSpeed/blob/master/schemas/org.gnome.shell.extensions.netspeed.gschema.xml

But I am not sure how this is supposed to work. There doesn't seems to be any sign of netspeed settings in gsettings. I have installed it through browser since I could not find a package for it. This is the content of schema in my home directory:

$ cat ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/[email protected]/schemas/org.gnome.shell.extensions.simplenetspeed.gschema.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<schemalist gettext-domain="[email protected]">
  <schema path="/org/gnome/shell/extensions/simplenetspeed/" id="org.gnome.shell.extensions.simplenetspeed">
      <key name="mode" type="i">
        <range min="0" max="4" />
        <default>0</default>
      </key>
  </schema>
</schemalist>
$ gsettings list-keys org.gnome.shell.extensions.simplenetspeed

I've commented on the wrong extension, sorry. This problem was with this one: https://github.com/biji/simplenetspeed
