The reason for this is a regression in node-openid due to behavior changes in tls.js which were introduced in node v0.4.7. A patch is underway, see #37. I am closing this issue as it is a duplicate of the aforementioned issue.

Does using OpenID with Google's Federated Login work now? If so, would it be possible for anybody to provide an example?

Yes, it does. Just run the included sample, and use Google's endpoint (https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id) as your identifier.

OpenID is based around users supplying identifiers (URLs). As you've observed, the first step of OpenID is discovery. There are dozens of excellent resources on the OpenID authentication process around the net.
