I think it's inliner's work. When one benchmark is commented out genFnPutWordNleV
is mentioned only once and thus gets inlined and specialized with corresponding performance boost. Marking it with NOINLINE
reverts performance to old value.
P.S. Code is very unhaskellish. I'm surprised that it's even work with all unsafe functions (esp. unsafeCoerce
). Did you consider binary or cereal for serialization?

You are right about inlining. When I explicitly marked genFnPutWordNleV
as INLINE
, that made the benchmark consistent. So, it seems to be inliner's doing. I will close this issue.
About binary/cereal - yes, I have tried them but they are too slow. So, I wrote code closer to metal to get high performance. There is nothing unhaskellish as long as logic is sound :)
