A path forward

I propose that we separate the publishing of stories from the promoting and packaging of stories.

We need to publish the stories we intend to publish, then take action to tell the readers why they should spend time reading them.

From a workflow perspective, we would publish a story on our site and separately, write a promo to the story on the homepage and elsewhere. We'll call this creating a 'promo' or 'package'.

This will give us:

  • the flexibility to point to any story, link or mention that relevant to the larger, government community
  • more control over the weight and importance of items we give to items
  • the room and flexibility to control and adapt our voice and tone as the news changes

About Promos

A 'promo' is a small editorial device that points to something and tells the reader why this is interesting and worth reading. In addition, they can even link to related stories, resources, topics or events.

At the root of every promo is a single headline and URL that points to one thing. Beyond that, everything else that is added in helps to add weight and context to the news item.

Promos are also designed to work on mobile screens and in a variety of layouts on larger screens. They are taggable and gracefully degrade to a simple list in times of need.

In an effort to be more agile with our homepage ☝️, I would like to try taking the HTML + layout and converting the logic behind it to be powered by a single data-file that includes the top six featured items on DigitalGov.

It would be able to support:

  • Blog posts
  • Videos
  • Any page with a decent image

fields

  • image
  • title
  • description
  • link

This seems like the easiest way to get some change to the top of the homepage.
