you can just do the following which also work as version numbers.
npm install gruntjs/grunt-contrib-copy#2bd6f0e99e // shorthand node >= v0.8.17
npm install https://github.com/gruntjs/grunt-contrib-copy/archive/2bd6f0e99e.tar.gzfrom grunt-contrib-copy.

i should note though in its current stage, it most likely wont work. as it deps on ~0.4.0 of grunt which will most likely grab rc5 so i recommend using my PR #35.
EDIT: whoops. you should be fine with above as I was thinking devDeps which are only needed if your doing PRs/testing and such.
