Research presented in both when left might not be right and left vs right sidebar which one performs both suggest that whether side navigation is aligned to the left or right does not have a significant impact on the usability of a webpage and that aligning a side nav to the right can be beneficial in that can increase the priority of the content on a page.

However, aligning the side nav to the left is a more conventional and familiar approach for most users and it is suggested that users will look for information where they expect it to be in a conventional layout (i.e. side nav on left) and if the layout changes (i.e. side nav on the right) then this increases the amount of time and effort a user has to spend trying to find or scan for information on a webpage.
