you can definitely use analytics.js directly. You just need to make sure that either the cookie domain field is not "google.com" or the cookie path is not set to "/". In your case, if all your pages are under /events, you can just set the cookie path in your 'create' command like this:
ga('create', 'UA-XXXX-Y', 'auto', {'cookiePath': '/events'});
