The instructions are unclear for Chrome OS, but after some poking I managed to get it to work.
On Chome OS:
- Install the extension
- Go to system settings, "Languages and Input", click "Manage input methods" to show all available input methods. You should be able to find some Compose Key input methods, now.
- Select (check) "Compose Key (US)" or other appropriate "Compose Key" variant (e.g. Dvorak)
- Go back. You should now be looking at the "Languages and Input" options, and the Compose Key input method you select should be shown, but is not active/enabled.
- Click the "Compose Key" input method. It should now show as Enabled (green text beneath the input method name).
It may be necessary to log out and log back in somewhere between steps 2 and 5.
@rfc1036 , @TheRangerbot - does this resolve the issue for you?
@bderrly , If this is the fix, I can put forward a PR for composekey/options.html to improve the instructions.

Go to chrome://settings/languages.
from extra-keyboards-for-chrome-os.
I did, but there are no mentions of compose either there or in chrome://settings/?search=compose

Did you install the extension through the web store or manually?
I am assuming you have English (any of US, CA, UK) as a language as the extension only works with English language.
Try searching settings for "manage input". There should be a checkbox for "Compose Key (US)" (among other layouts like Dvorak, etc). If this is not the case maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling the extension.

I installed the extension from the store and have "English (United States)" configured as the system language. Reinstalling the extention (and also logging out and back in) did not help.

all of these extensions broke for me... Is chrome going to roll out new keyboard/IME for extensions or are we all f***ed?

@rfc1036 did you select the "Manage input methods" button in the first screenshot image you posted before? What do you see there? I am noticing now that the input options seem to be in a different location than they used to be. I have a little box at the top of screen on chrome://settings/languages that looks like the following:
You can also get here by clicking the "Search" button on your Chromebook and typing "settings" and opening that application.

I am going to take the silence to mean it is working now. If you're still having problems with the extension, please reopen this issue.

Sorry, somehow I missed your last reply. When I select "manage input methods" as in the first screenshot I see what you can see in the next two screenshots. This section now has moved to the chome os settings section indeed, but there is still no mention at all of "compose" among the available input methods.
This still happens with a Chromebook fully updated as of today.

Still not fixed, do you mind reopening this issue?

Honestly, I'm at a loss on how to help with this. You and @TheRangerbot are the only people that have this issue (or that have come to the github page to find a solution at any rate). I have tried multiple times to reproduce it and debug it and have come up with nothing.
Have you tried powerwashing your device and trying again?
from extra-keyboards-for-chrome-os.
Again, no changes: no compose input methods were available at step 2.
So I finally did a powerwash, checked the settings first thing after the boot and now everything works as expected.

I'm sorry that it took a powerwash to get it to work. I have no idea what could have happened that this was the case.
