As having NewConn which can convert a net.Conn to redigo.Conn, it's no need to handle timeout in redigo. The code below is much understandable and flexible than using special readTimeout & writeTimeout parameters.
conn, _ := net.Dial(...)
r := redis.NewConn(conn)
conn.SetDeadline(time.Now().Add(time.Second))
r.Do("...")
conn.SetReadDeadline(0) // wait forever
r.Do("BLPOP", ...)
And it's the same way a standard library, like net/smtp.
from redigo.
An application can manage the network connection deadline by specifying zero for the timeouts:
r := redis.NewConn(conn, 0 , 0)
If the timeouts are zero, then Redigo will not set the network connection deadlines.
Redigo provides optional deadline management because it's a convenience for most applications.

Applications should use the timeout argument to the block commands to specify a timeout > 0 and < the timeout specified in dial.
