IPA latin variants about eb-garamond HOT 4 OPEN

Good suggestions. For the italic [a], I wonder if Georg has seen the form used in the (former) official handwritten version of the IPA (you can find it on Wikipedia). I’ve been wanting to see that shape implemented in an italic font.

Oh, and that chi from IPAPhon would look great in EB Garamond! I recommend it to Georg; it’s in some ways better than the alternatives that have been proposed so far.

Thanks for the suggestions! I have to confess, that I’m still not convinced of italic IPA characters.
The IPAPhon chi looks interesting, I’ll try to do something like that and see how it fits. As for the other greek letters, I think it might be ok to do such substitution. What’s more, I’ve come across the fact that there’s a languagesystem IPPH. If this is practicable I might localise all IPA chars to that instead of the ss06.

I second the suggestion of italic IPA characters since they're widely used in linguistics. It is true that IPA symbols in phonetic transcriptions are always upright, but they are also commonly used in practical transcriptions and historical reconstructions, which are usually set in italic style when embedded within the text of another language.
