Yes. It is on the agenda, but it is not trivial, the priority now is for stabilizing the work that have been already done. But don’t let this prevent you from adding such lookups.

XeTeX grew an option to handle space shaping since then: there is now \XeTeXinterwordspaceshaping.

So if I understand correctly I should add a space.afterf which is wider after an 'f'?

Or you can kern it wider, I don't think the substitution is necessary, but either should work.
