We haven't done anything on this because it isn't clear what should be done, if anything. It may be unnecessary if postgresql is able to compress the data well.
If it turns out that we need to do something, it isn't clear whether it should be at the level of the json api or the storage backend. The network traffic would definitely be reduced with some kind of json api support, but it isn't clear how to do it in a clean/generic way. With gzip support (which is currently employed) it may be unnecessary for reducing network traffic.
At the storage backend abstraction level, the space savings isn't clearly worth the additional complexity... so far. This may change as we ramp up usage.
