I'm thinking about that for a long time now and I totally agree. But I don't know what is the best way to do that. I'd like to have an easy to use key/value storage. Like redis (but this one need a server).
Maybe a small abstract can help. Something to allow to use redis if you already have one and fallback to shelve in other cases.
