A little of both. This schema is trying to extend itself, with itself (which violates the semantic meaning of extends). However, a schema should never crash a validator. This is a low priority bug.

Thanks for the quick reply

I don't fully understand the violations of semantic - maybe you can help me with an example how to do it otherwise. (btw: Shall I move this to the json-schema group?)

I want to define a recursive datastructure, where I want to add some features/restrictions to the sub-nodes. So I can't simply use

"child" : { "$ref" : "#" }

Any suggestion how to define a recursive structure, where the the start node differs from the other nodes?.

I tried something like

{
    "id" : "http://tree/#",
    "type" : "object",
    "extends" : {
        "id" : "#Abstract",
        "type" : "object"

    },
    "properties" : {
        "child" : {
            "id" : "#Child",
            "extends" : { "$ref" :"#Abstract" },
            "properties" : {
                "child" : { "$ref" : "#Child" }
            }

        }
    }
}

But now I get a "unknown schema reference" for #Child.
