Very sorry about the issue. This is a bug in the smmap
module, which is a dependency of gitdb
, which is a dependency of gitpython
.
If this simple line change was included, it would solve the problem: gitpython-developers/smmap#2
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that that's going to happen though.
I spent ~5 hours a few weeks ago trying to push up my own versions of the dependencies onto PyPi to no avail (the packages are poorly setup).
This is the only thing that's been holding up my next release of legit, to be honest.
Tempted to just call git myself, really.

Sorry for the mind dump. This problem has been bothering me for a while. I'm disappointed that a user encountered it.
Thanks for the report. I'll keep the issue updated here as I decide how to go forward.

No worries. In a twisted bit of irony, this didn't end up actually causing me any issues. On Monday, the GitHub For Mac app ate a branch of mine on a simple commit. After cursing git's love affair with history modification (I'm an Hg ex-pat), I wrote a script to back up my repos on a VERY reguar basis, so git or any frontends can eat my data and it won't be the end of the world. ;-)
Anyway... I read the other bug -- could you just create a test case for this guy to try out, to demonstrate the issue for him? I might be able to donate my repo if you need a dataset to reliably trigger the problem.

so this can be closed now, thanks to gitpython-developers/smmap@24a3505 ?
